True happiness comes from Allah
“You lose Allah, you lose everything.”
The greatest blessing and deepest source of lasting happiness is Islam and closeness to Allah, so believers should prioritize their deen over worldly accomplishments while treating family, work, and worship as grateful acts of service.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Stress and comparison can make people overlook the blessings in family, work, and daily responsibilities.
- Worldly possessions and relationships cannot provide lasting happiness; true happiness comes from Allah and His guidance.
- The Prophet's example at the Battle of the Trench shows that iman gives strength during overwhelming hardship.
- Prayer, fasting, and family responsibilities should be viewed as opportunities and trusts from Allah rather than burdens.
- Believers should prioritize deen, sincerity, gratitude, and preparation for the Hereafter over wealth and status.
- The khutbah closes by urging gratitude, sincere dua, and avoiding a relationship with Allah based only on emergencies.
In the khateeb's words
“the believer will never focus on seeking happiness from anything from this dunya understanding that if happiness comes from the dunya it is a blessing from Allah”
“you lose Allah you lose everything you lose your family and your wealth you still have a chance you still have an opportunity Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“don't leave Allah just as a 911 phone call and you'll truly appreciate that relationship with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
For the dinner table
Allah has given us many blessings, but stress can make us notice only what is difficult. The khutbah reminds us to see family, work, and responsibilities as gifts and trusts from Allah. Worldly blessings can bring joy, but lasting happiness comes from Allah and from appreciating the gift of Islam. Prayer, fasting, and other acts of worship are opportunities to reconnect with Him, not burdens. We should remember Allah in peaceful times as well as difficult ones, and thank Him for guiding us.
- What is one tiring responsibility that might also be a blessing?
- What helps you remember Allah when life is going well?
- How can we make salah feel more like a gift this week?
