Love Allah above worldly attachments through salawat

IANT · Amir Muriby
In one sentence

Loving Allah and His Messenger must outweigh all worldly attachments, and the practical expression of that love, especially on Friday, is sending abundant salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet Muhammad, which carries immense promised rewards.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Standard Arabic khutbah opening with taqwa verse (Al-Imran 3:102)
  2. Recitation and translation of At-Tawbah 9:24: worldly loves vs. love of Allah, His Messenger, and striving in His way
  3. Hadith of Umar ibn al-Khattab: the Prophet must be more beloved than one's own self
  4. The Prophet longs for his later 'brothers' who believed without seeing him
  5. Virtues of Friday: best day, Adam's creation, an hour when dua is never rejected, hence the command to send abundant salawat
  6. What 'salawat' and 'salam' actually mean: Allah's blessing of the Prophet, our dua for him, peace upon him in life, grave, and hereafter
  7. Benefits of salawat: fulfilling a divine command (Al-Ahzab 33:56), the Ubayy ibn Ka'b hadith that worries are relieved and sins forgiven, tenfold return (Abu Hurayrah), ten degrees raised (Anas), closeness to the Prophet and his shafa'ah on Judgment Day (with Imam Nawawi's commentary)
  8. Practical adab: say the full 'sallallahu alayhi wa sallam' unhurried, dedicate five minutes to salawat; closing dua and salah
Try this week
Send abundant salawat upon the Prophet, especially on Fridays
When the Prophet's name is mentioned, say the full 'sallallahu alayhi wa sallam' slowly instead of abbreviating it
Set aside dedicated time (e.g., five minutes) for salawat instead of only itemized dua, trusting Allah to handle one's worries
Slow down and reflect during the tashahhud in prayer rather than rushing through it
Increase salawat to attain closeness to the Prophet and his intercession on the Day of Judgment
