Gossip spreads hatred through families and communities
“The parents and children will inherit that hate.”
Begin the new year by cultivating Allah-centered love, forgiving family members, avoiding gossip and public shaming, and serving others to strengthen community unity.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Contrasts common New Year resolutions with the deeper qualities that define a real believer.
- Explains that differences are inevitable and highlights Allah's love for those who love, meet, visit, and support one another for His sake.
- Warns that spying, backbiting, and discussing others' faults spread hatred through families and communities.
- Uses reports involving Umar's governor and Abu Dujanah to distinguish private counsel from gossip and public exposure.
- Calls listeners to forgive, seek forgiveness, address issues directly, stop talking about others, and serve people.
- Closes with prayers for clean hearts, unity, faith, and righteous action.
In the khateeb's words
“what really matters is that how do you respond to these differences how do you face those challenges”
“when community get involved talking about the faults of others then the parents and children will inherit that hate”
For the dinner table
At the start of a new year, the khateeb encouraged us to focus not only on worship, but also on how we treat one another. Differences happen, even among good people, so we should respond by forgiving, avoiding gossip and public exposure, and addressing concerns directly. He reminded us that love for Allah's sake, clean hearts, and helping others strengthen families and communities. This week, we can spend five quiet minutes checking our hearts, seek forgiveness from family members, and look for ways to be useful. If we cannot help, we should at least avoid creating problems for others.
- What is one disagreement you could respond to more patiently this week?
- How can our family replace talking about someone's faults with direct, helpful conversation?
- What is one useful thing you can do for someone before next Jumu'ah?
