Great women shaped Musa's story
“Islam, the deen of Allah is not only for men, but for men and women.”
Continuing the story of Musa (AS), the khutbah shows that great women, his mother, his sister, and Asiya the wife of Pharaoh, were central to Allah's plan, proving that Islam honors women and that both men and women can serve the deen.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Virtues of Jumu'ah: light in the heart, angels present, and the special hour when du'a is accepted
- Recap of the Musa series: the Isra journey where 50 daily prayers were reduced to five at Musa's urging
- Musa is mentioned 136 times in the Qur'an, and his story is surrounded by great women
- Contrast: Musa's one sister searched for him while Yusuf's eleven brothers never searched for Yusuf
- Asiya, wife of Pharaoh, saved baby Musa and separated herself from Pharaoh's disbelief
- Asiya's du'a in Surah al-Tahreem and her rank alongside Maryam as an example for all believers
- Islam honors women: the Qur'an is clear, and Muslims should be proud of their wives, daughters, and sisters
- Thanks to the sisters who made sandwiches and encouragement to support the masjid through sadaqah
In the khateeb's words
“Because of him, today we pray five times with the reward of 50 times.”
“Islam, the deen of Allah is not only for men, but for men and women.”
“She became a school of faith, a school of Iman, a school of Taqwa, of guidance.”
“That's why the deen of Allah can be served by every Muslim, man and woman, by every Muslim.”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb continued the story of Prophet Musa, reminding us that he is the most-mentioned prophet in the Qur'an. We heard how Musa convinced the Prophet Muhammad to ask Allah to reduce fifty daily prayers down to five, with the reward of fifty still intact. The khutbah focused on the remarkable women around Musa: his mother, his sister who searched for him and brought him home, and Asiya, the wife of Pharaoh, who rescued him as a baby and later chose faith over her tyrant husband. Allah honored Asiya in Surah al-Tahreem alongside Maryam as an example for all believers. The message: Islam belongs to men and women alike, and the Qur'an's stories of believing women should make us proud of our mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters.
- If you were Asiya, would you have had the courage to stand up to Pharaoh, what gave her that strength?
- Musa's sister went looking for her brother, when did you last go out of your way for a sibling?
- We pray five times but get the reward of fifty, what other 'deals' has Allah given us that we forget about?
