Respect every life without compromising belief
“We must show respect for all human life.”
Remembering 9/11 should renew Muslims' commitment to the sanctity of human life, respectful treatment of non-Muslims, doctrinal clarity, and rejection of takfir and violence.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames the twenty-fifth anniversary of 9/11 as an occasion for Islamic reflection.
- Establishes the dignity and sanctity of every human life, regardless of belief.
- Explains respectful adab toward Jews and Christians while maintaining tawhid and doctrinal clarity.
- Rejects both universalist salvation claims and takfirist calls to kill those who disagree.
- Distinguishes sincere, complete iman from inevitably imperfect amal through shahadah and marriage examples.
- Extends respect for life to the dead and the fetus, then urges teaching correct deen to the community.
In the khateeb's words
“So we must show respect for all human life. This is an integral part of our deen.”
“We pass the judgment based on the exterior condition. What they say, we take it at face value.”
“So our amal, our ibadah will never be 100% and our iman must never be less than 100%.”
“when we must respect the body, after the soul departs, we must also respect the fetus, before the soul enters.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah used the twenty-fifth anniversary of 9/11 as a reminder to think about what Islam teaches regarding human life. Islam asks us to honor every person and speak to people of other faiths with good manners, while remaining firm about tawhid and the truth of faith. The khateeb warned us away from two extremes: saying belief does not matter, or declaring Muslims outside Islam and justifying their killing. He also taught that faith must be sincere and complete, our actions will remain imperfect, and respect for life includes caring for the fetus before the soul enters.
- What is one way we can show respect for someone who believes differently from us?
- What does it mean to have complete faith while admitting our actions are imperfect?
- How can we practice kindness and care for human life this week?
