Stay faithful through discipline and community
“Every person is a shepherd of someone else.”
Because Muslims lack a top-down system enforcing Islamic practice, they must hold the line through personal devotion, self-restraint, and supportive community accountability.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Muslim movements have wrestled with how Islam should be implemented individually and socially.
- The Prophet’s seerah demonstrates complementary bottom-up efforts in Mecca and top-down structures in Medina.
- Without a Sharia-enforcing state today, community life provides cohesion, encouragement, and moral accountability.
- Surah an-Nazi'at identifies concern for one’s standing before Allah as the first foundation of commitment.
- Restraining the nafs from desires such as gambling and phone-enabled temptations is the second foundation.
- Each believer is both a building block and a shepherd whose consistency affects family and community.
In the khateeb's words
“a community has multiple benefits right has multiple benefits some benefits are very apparent some benefits are unspoken they are behavioral”
“the bottom up approach usually doesn't work because you are expecting everyone to do the right thing”
“every person is a shepherd of someone else if you fail the likelihood of someone else failing is there as well”
For the dinner table
The khutbah explains that Islam grows through both personal effort and healthy community support. In Mecca, the Prophet focused on building committed individuals; in Medina, he also built social structures that helped people live by their faith. Since we do not live under a system that enforces Islamic law, each of us has to care about our standing before Allah and restrain our desires. Good company, regular jama'ah, and accountability can help us resist temptations such as gambling and phone-driven distractions. Every person’s choices affect the people around them, so we should ask Allah for firmness and help one another hold the line.
- What is one good habit our family can do together to help us stay firm?
- What is one phone habit that helps you protect your attention and choices?
- Who can you encourage this week, and how can you do it kindly?
