Our habits shape our final moments

“Our daily habits that we build today are going to be the habits that reflect on us in our final moments.”

The khateeb, at 45:38

In one sentence

Because death can come without warning and final moments reflect daily habits, Muslims should abandon shameful actions, pursue steady spiritual improvement, and repair relationships with those closest to them.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb talked about getting ready for our last moment in this world. He reminded us that the last time we see someone is the memory they keep of us forever, so we should live as if any moment could be our last. He gave three pieces of advice. First, stop doing anything we would be embarrassed or sorry to be caught doing when we die. Second, try to be a little better every day than we were yesterday, competing with ourselves instead of with other people. Third, take care of our relationships with family, because they are the ones who will be with us at the end. He shared that his own brother passed away suddenly, and he is thankful their last conversation was a happy one.

  1. If today were your last day, what is one thing you would want to make sure you did?
  2. What is one thing you are doing better this year than last year, and what do you want to get better at next?
  3. Is there anyone in our family you would like to say sorry to or thank today?
