Stay united despite religious disagreements
“I can still stand behind the man that I disagree with on this particular issue and still call him my brother.”
Muslims should cultivate taqwa by speaking truthfully, studying before condemning unfamiliar practices, and preserving brotherhood across disagreements rather than dividing the ummah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Calls listeners to taqwa, full submission, truthful speech, and righteous action.
- Urges humility, deference, listening to critics, and researching disagreements before judging.
- Explains kufr as both disbelief and ingratitude, then recounts how the Prophet united the Aws and Khazraj.
- Applies the warning against division to disputes over mawlid, bid'ah, dress, prayer, and religious authority.
- Contrasts harmful innovations with initiating a beneficial sunnah, urging diligent research and moderation.
- Calls Muslims to stop fighting, command good kindly, pray together despite differences, repent, remember Allah, and pray with focus.
In the khateeb's words
“That shows humbleness within you, because the fact that you could possibly be wrong and guided to the straight path.”
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Has taught us the middle way And that's the way That we should always be seeking for”
“I can still stand in the sufuf next to them When it's time to pray I can still stand behind the man That I disagree with on this particular issue And still call him my brother”
“We need to stop fighting Amongst each other We need to start working With one another We need to put away Our differences with one another Stop judging one another And look towards the inward way”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us to stay conscious of Allah and to speak with truth and kindness, because our words reflect our hearts. The khateeb encouraged us to be humble enough to listen when someone challenges our understanding. In discussing Mawlid and differences among Muslims, he urged us to research unfamiliar practices before judging others. He reminded us that learning about the Prophet Muhammad’s character should help us treat people with mercy and bring our hearts together. We can disagree and still pray beside one another, care for one another, and ask Allah to guide us all.
- What kind words could you use when you feel frustrated with someone?
- What could you ask someone to better understand a Muslim practice that is unfamiliar to you?
- How could you help someone feel included even when you disagree?
