Muslims must build strength against hatred
“The strong Muslim is better and more beloved by Allah than the weak Muslim, but there is good in both.”
Muslims must respond to anti-Muslim hatred and communal threats by cultivating spiritual, intellectual, and practical strength through faith, self-reform, security, advocacy, and reliance on Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Recounts an attack on an Islamic center and honors the sacrifices of Amin Abdullah, Mansour Abul Izz, and Nadir Awad.
- Uses Amin Abdullah’s definition of success to frame martyrdom as returning to Allah with a pure soul.
- Warns that anti-Muslim hatred affects Canada as well as the United States, citing the Muslim Association of Canada’s statement.
- Explains the Prophet’s teachings on strength, beneficial effort, resilience, and avoiding helplessness.
- Connects communal weakness to loving worldly life and fearing death, then calls for inward transformation.
- Calls for stronger mosque security, lockdown protocols, public advocacy, support for community advocates, and persistent dua.
In the khateeb's words
“The strong Muslim is better and more beloved by Allah than the weak Muslim, but there is good in both.”
“And strength in this case is not just military physical strength, strength of mind, strength of Iman.”
“Not be ashamed to stand up for who we are.”
For the dinner table
This khutbah called us to build strength in our faith, our minds, and our communities. The khateeb recounted how three men gave their lives protecting others during an attack on an Islamic center, and he stressed the importance of safety plans for children. He reminded us to work toward what benefits us, seek Allah’s help, and resist despair when hardship comes. He explained that improving our community begins with changing ourselves. He also encouraged us to speak against anti-Muslim hatred, support people who advocate for the community, and keep making dua for protection and guidance.
- What is one way you could strengthen your mind or your faith this week?
- When something feels difficult, how could you ask Allah for help and take a useful next step?
- What could our family do to help people in our community feel supported?
