Call upon Allah for what only He can do
“Call upon Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala alone for the things that no other can do but Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
The khutbah teaches that sound tawhid requires learning Allah's revealed names and calling upon Allah alone for what only He can do, while cultivating that relationship through prayer and study.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Quranic recitations warn against rejecting revelation, arrogance, shirk, and the consequences of disbelief.
- Ramadan announcements cover i'tikaf registration, tahajjud schedules, suhur, and delaying witr until the final prayer.
- The khateeb explains Surah al-A'raf 7:180: invoke Allah through His beautiful names and avoid inventing or misusing them.
- He distinguishes asking people for ordinary means from asking Allah alone for supernatural matters, warning against invoking graves.
- Stories about Henry and another late conversion emphasize Allah's guidance and the uncertainty of one's final moment.
- The khateeb discusses distinctions among divine names and encourages families to study Allah's names together.
- Closing recitations and supplications seek forgiveness, guidance, Ramadan acceptance, and relief for Al-Aqsa.
In the khateeb's words
“so you call upon Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala by His beautiful names by the holy names and keep away from those who abuse His names”
“it's very important that you call upon Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala alone for the things that no other can do but Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
For the dinner table
This khutbah centered on tawhid: Allah alone deserves the prayers and requests that are beyond human ability. The khateeb encouraged us to learn Allah's beautiful names, use them in du'a, and avoid inventing or misusing names. He explained that asking a person for ordinary help, or asking a living person to make du'a, is different from invoking the dead or asking anyone for what only Allah can give. Stories about people who embraced Islam near the end of life reminded us that guidance can come at any moment and that we should keep hope, humility, and compassion. He ended by encouraging families to study Allah's names together and seek forgiveness, guidance, and acceptance in Ramadan.
- Which of Allah's names helps you most when you are worried, and why?
- What is one request you can make directly to Allah this week?
- How could our family study one of Allah's names together?
