Remember Allah through life's changes

In one sentence

Because change is a divinely designed part of life that activates our fitrah, believers should respond to every rise and fall by remembering Allah and using health, wealth, youth, time, and life for good before they pass.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Frames change as inherent to life through day and night, the water cycle, biological cycles, and cosmic motion.
  2. Explains that human ups and downs awaken fitrah and reorient faith toward Allah's balanced center.
  3. Teaches that Allah judges choices and deeds, not fluctuating feelings or the difficulty of circumstances.
  4. Uses the reminder of five blessings before five losses to urge action while health, wealth, youth, time, and life remain.
  5. Defines true loss as allowing opportunities for good to pass unused, while connecting every state to Allah's names and nearness.
  6. Closes with hope in ease after hardship, prayers for guidance and the oppressed, and congregational prayer.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah reminded us that change is part of life, just as day turns into night and rain moves through the water cycle. Our lives and our faith have ups and downs, and those changes can remind us to turn toward Allah. The khateeb explained that we are judged by our good and bad choices, rather than by whether we feel happy or sad or have an easy or difficult life. He encouraged us to use our health, wealth, youth, time, and life to do good while we have the opportunity. He closed with the reminder that Allah is with us through our highs and lows and that with hardship comes ease.

  1. What is something you enjoyed today that you sometimes forget to thank Allah for?
  2. How could we use our time or energy to help an elderly person this week?
  3. When a day feels difficult, what could help you remember Allah and choose a kind action?
