How the Prophet prepared for his death
“Take the rituals of hajj from me, for I don't know whether I will make another hajj after this hajj.”
The Prophet Muhammad’s death was preceded by clear signs in revelation, his final acts, and his farewell counsel, while his leadership and illness demonstrated wisdom and preparation for meeting Allah.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The khutbah opens with Umm Ayman’s grief over the end of revelation and introduces a series on the Prophet’s death.
- The Prophet appoints young Usama ibn Zayd to lead an army and defends the leadership of Usama and his father Zayd.
- Surah al-Nasr, repeated Qur’an review, extended i'tikaf, and farewell statements signal the Prophet’s approaching death.
- The Prophet gives final indications to companions, including Mu'adh, that they may not meet again.
- During his illness, he continues leading prayer until appointing Abu Bakr, followed by a closing prayer and salawat.
In the khateeb's words
“Umar radiallahu anhu wanted to prove to the Sahaba the status of ibn Abbas. Yes, he was young in age. Lakin when it came to ilm and knowledge of the deen, he was up there.”
“The only view that I have with why Jibreel alayhi salam did this is because I think my time in this dunya is coming to an end.”
“Take the rituals of hajj from me, for I don't know whether I will make another hajj after this hajj.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah began a series about the final days and death of the Prophet Muhammad. It showed how the Prophet prepared his companions through leadership decisions, farewell advice, and signs that his life was nearing its end. He honored Usama despite his youth and reminded people that knowledge and character matter more than age or status. During his illness, he continued serving the community until Abu Bakr led the prayer. The khutbah invites us to remember the Prophet with love, learn from his final guidance, and prepare ourselves to meet Allah.
- Why do you think the Prophet trusted a young person with such an important responsibility?
- What would you want to learn carefully from someone if you knew you might not see them again?
- How can we show love for the Prophet through our actions this week?
