Make summer a season of purposeful growth
“If my time is filled by honorable things, my life will be honorable.”
Because summer brings extra time and life’s blessings are quickly lost, Muslims should treat the season as a mission: deepen reliance on Allah, learn across generations, serve others, and fill their hours with purposeful good.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Connects summer, Muharram, Ashura, and current community pressures to Muslim responsibility and resistance to oppression.
- Explains that life, health, and free time are divine blessings that must be used purposefully before they disappear.
- Presents the advice to use five blessings before five losses and urges youth to learn from elders.
- Uses the Ibn Abbas hadith to teach reliance on Allah, sacrifice, spiritual formation, and healthy relationships.
- Warns against phones, games, and empty time while encouraging good company, mentoring, volunteering, and service.
- Closes by asking listeners to identify the message they carry and make summer a season of growth and devotion.
In the khateeb's words
“take advantage of five before five your youth before your old age your health before your illness your wealth before your poverty your free time before your distraction and your life before your death”
“if you don't busy yourself with good things it'll busy you with bad things”
“if you're someone who could teach if you're someone who can help if you're someone who can volunteer try to find a way to plug in if you have time”
“if my time is filled by petty things my life will be petty if my time is filled by honorable things my life will be honorable”
For the dinner table
Summer is not just extra free time; it is a gift of health, life, and opportunity that will not return. The khateeb encouraged us to remember the Prophet’s advice to use our youth, health, wealth, free time, and life before they disappear. He urged young people to learn from elders, and urged older people to make themselves available as mentors. Families should fill the season with prayer, good company, service, and meaningful sacrifice instead of letting phones, games, or harmful influences take over. A beneficial summer is one that brings us closer to Allah and helps us carry goodness to others.
- What is one good thing you want your summer time to produce?
- Who is someone older you could learn from this summer?
- How could our family serve or help someone together?
