Food blessings should not be wasted

“We have to teach our kids to appreciate the blessings of Allah upon us.”

The khateeb, at 17:06

In one sentence

Muslims should honor Allah's blessings, especially food, by teaching children prophetic eating manners, taking only what they will use, and avoiding waste.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces Quranic guidance from Surah al-A'raf about eating, drinking, and avoiding waste.
  2. Describes food and water abundance and the waste seen among children.
  3. Teaches prophetic eating manners: saying Bismillah, using the right hand, and eating from what is in front.
  4. Urges families to take small portions, save leftovers, and remember people facing hunger and water scarcity.
  5. Broadens gratitude to include time, money, wealth, health, and other blessings.
  6. Closes with reminders about moderation, accountability for wealth, and teaching children the Sunnah.

For the dinner table

Allah has given us many blessings, including the food and drink we enjoy. The khutbah reminds us to say Bismillah, use the right hand, eat from what is in front of us, and take only a small portion at first. We can return for more and save leftovers instead of throwing them away, while remembering people who do not have enough food or clean water. By caring for food, money, time, health, and other blessings, we show gratitude to Allah and teach our children the Sunnah.

  1. What is one way our family can waste less food this week?
  2. How can we show gratitude for a blessing besides food?
  3. What should we do when we want more food at a gathering?
