Mercy should shape Muslim family life

“The sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad is ease, is comfort, is laying, helping in the home, showing kindness, supporting, preparing.”

The khateeb, at 26:32

In one sentence

Muslim homes should be sanctuaries of mercy, tranquility, and mutual service built through the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad’s sunnah rather than cultural expectations.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah reminded us that our homes should be places of mercy, peace, and comfort. Being good to our families means more than providing money or a nice place to live; it also means speaking kindly and remembering that Allah sees how we treat one another. The khateeb described the Prophet Muhammad's gentleness and service to his family, even while carrying great responsibilities. He reminded us that this mercy includes children, parents, and relatives, and that stress does not excuse taking our anger out on them. We can put this reminder into practice by helping at home, apologizing when we are wrong, and letting the Quran and Sunnah guide our family life.

  1. What helps you feel peaceful and welcome when you come home?
  2. When you have had a difficult day, what helps you speak kindly?
  3. What is one way you could help someone in our family this week?
