Discipline your soul before time is lost

“A believer understands that his minutes are treasures.”

The khateeb, at 5:49

In one sentence

Because life is a finite trust, believers must discipline their souls by resisting indulgence, procrastination, and distraction and invest their time in worship, service, and purposeful striving.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Time is precious, and believers will be accountable for how they spend their lives.
  2. Overindulgence in permissible comforts can weaken spiritual discipline and attach the soul to worldly life.
  3. Digital distractions such as TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and late-night gaming quietly consume time needed for worship.
  4. The Battle of Mu'tah illustrates the Companions confronting fear and disciplining the nafs.
  5. Warnings about long hopes and following desires expose procrastination and wishful faith.
  6. Consistent worship and purposeful striving lead toward the purified, peaceful soul welcomed into Paradise.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that our lives are made of days, so every hour is part of us. He warned that even permissible comforts, too much sleep, food, talking, or scrolling, can quietly weaken our hearts and steal time from worship. Like the body needs exercise, the soul needs regular prayer, remembrance, Qur'an, service, and effort instead of only wishing for a good ending. The goal is to meet Allah with a peaceful soul that has lived with purpose.

  1. What is one distraction you could replace with something that brings you closer to Allah?
  2. How can worship act like exercise for your soul this week?
  3. What does using your time well look like in our family?
