Parents must build strong Muslim children
“The best thing a father could do for his son is to prepare him to be a man.”
Protecting the Muslim home requires deliberate tarbiyah: parents must instill character, responsibility, and a sense of duty in their children, and children must honor their parents, so that both preserve their faith and identity.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Opening duas and framing: July khutbahs aligned with Ihsan Academy's summer tarbiyah themes
- Tarbiyah is hard: work, logistics, screens, and peer influence compete for children
- Gratitude for taken-for-granted blessings (tongue, sight) and the value of a word, a minute
- Parents' duties: good etiquette as the best gift, providing without raising dependents emotionally or spiritually
- Children's duties: parents as the ticket to Jannah, remembering parental sacrifice
In the khateeb's words
“How can I inspire the young Muslims that are my dependents and see values in them that make them strong in their identity, confident in their Islam, able to articulate themselves, able to make decisions?”
“Am I nurturing a sense of responsibility in my kids?”
“The best thing a father could do for his son is to prepare him to be a man.”
“if you manage that relationship the right way, that'll be your ticket to Jannah.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that raising children with faith and good character takes patience, sacrifice, and real face-to-face time. Parents are responsible for nurturing both their children’s worldly needs and, most importantly, their relationship with Allah and their lasting well-being in the Hereafter. Children are urged to recognize the blessings of their parents, serve them with humility, and see family responsibilities as a path toward Jannah. Everyone is also asked to use blessings, words, time, and freedom responsibly rather than living only for personal enjoyment. When families fulfill these duties together, they strengthen Muslim identity, protect one another, and hope to meet as generations in Jannah.
- What is one responsibility you can take on at home this week?
- How can we spend some of our free time helping someone else?
- What is one blessing from your parents or family that you are grateful for?
