Personal devotion must become communal action
“Personal devotion in America is not enough.”
True ihsan requires Muslims to turn personal devotion into beautiful, organized communal building that serves society and revives civilizational ambition while seeking Allah’s mercy.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reflects on Allah’s mercy and the contrasting spiritual states at death, in the grave, and on Judgment Day.
- Urges sincere intention at Jumu’ah and hope for a redemptive moment of divine mercy.
- Uses Andalusia as evidence that Muslims once combined faith with excellence in civilization, governance, beauty, and plural flourishing.
- Defines ihsan as seeing Allah’s signs and expressing faith through beauty and constructive work.
- Calls for youth programs, business support, endowments, debt relief, marriage help, and mental-health support as communal obligations.
- Challenges American Muslims to move beyond private worship and build Medina-like communities with unity and purpose.
In the khateeb's words
“We are here because we want our Lord to look to us, With a single moment of redemptive mercy.”
“If we inhale Iman, we exhale beauty. So if our deen has become ugly, the way we're expressing it, it actually reflects an ugliness in our Iman.”
“Fard Kifaya are what? Communal obligations. If one group does it, then everyone else is free of blame. But if no one does it, everyone is sinful”
“Personal devotion in America is not enough. We need to build Medina's.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Allah’s mercy can transform a person’s final outcome, so we should come to Allah sincerely and hope in Him without taking sin lightly. It then used Muslim Spain, especially Andalusia, as a picture of what faith can build in culture, learning, beauty, governance, and care for neighbors. Ihsan means letting awareness of Allah shape not only private worship but also the quality and beauty of our work. The speaker urged our community to meet shared responsibilities through youth programs, debt relief, marriage support, mental-health refuge, businesses, and lasting endowments. The goal is to move from merely maintaining a mosque to building a caring, capable community.
- Where did you notice beauty or kindness this week, and how did it reflect faith?
- What is one need in our neighborhood that people could work together to address?
- What could our family build or improve for the benefit of others?
