A community carries each other's burdens
“A community is when we stop carrying only our own bricks and we start helping carry each other's.”
A true Muslim community forms when people carry their own responsibilities while willingly supporting others for Allah’s sake.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces Ammar ibn Yasir carrying a second brick while helping build the Prophet’s mosque.
- Distinguishes a congregation from a community that notices and shares people’s burdens.
- Explains community through mutual strengthening, love, mercy, privacy, and sincere correction.
- Urges early attention to loneliness, hardship, absence, and spiritual decline.
- Frames enduring relationships as blessings that should lead people toward Jannah.
- Rejects scorekeeping and calls for sacrificial, practical care for others.
- Challenges listeners to identify their personal “second brick” and act on it.
In the khateeb's words
“A community is when we stop carrying only our own bricks and we start helping carry each other's.”
“Your success is not my failure and your happiness is not my loss.”
“A person should be able to struggle without being humiliated for struggling.”
“Sometimes the thing that you carry for the person the most is their mistake. You forgive it and you care for it.”
For the dinner table
Every person carries a first brick: family, work, worries, grief, and responsibilities that others may not see. The khutbah asks us to carry a second brick by noticing people around us and sharing their burdens for Allah’s sake, even when we cannot fix the problem. A real community shows love by celebrating others’ blessings, mercy by protecting weakness and privacy, and care by offering honest reminders. Our relationships are blessings that can help us reach Jannah together, so we should not treat people as strangers or keep score. This week, choose one person outside your immediate circle and greet, call, visit, invite, or help them.
- Who at school, work, or in our neighborhood might be carrying a heavy first brick?
- How can we celebrate someone else’s good news with a sincere heart?
