True love means following the Prophet
“The religion is based upon following the messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.”
In one sentence
The khutbah argues that true love of the Prophet is shown by following the Qur’an, his Sunnah, and his Companions, so celebrating the Mawlid as a religious practice is an impermissible innovation.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames guidance to the straight path as the greatest supplication.
- Defines the straight path as following the Prophet and his Companions.
- Argues that the religion was completed and cannot be expanded through personal opinion.
- Uses examples from Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali to illustrate strict adherence.
- Applies the argument to Mawlid, rejecting it as a later religious innovation.
- Calls listeners to practice the Sunnah daily and avoid innovations, shirk, and excess.

Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“this is a guidance that we should ask Allah and supplicate and humble ourselves in supplicating asking Allah to guide us to the straight path”
“the religion is based upon following the messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam”
“innovating in the religion and following any type of innovation and adding anything to the religion is an accusation to the messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us to ask Allah for guidance to the straight path. It taught that loving the Prophet means learning and following his example every day, together with the example of his Companions. The speaker warned against adding new acts to religion and urged us to measure our worship by the Qur’an and Sunnah. At home, we can respond by learning one Sunnah, practicing it sincerely, and asking Allah to keep our hearts firm.
- What is one Sunnah you already practice, and how could you strengthen it this week?
- Why do you think the khutbah connected asking for guidance with following the Prophet?
- How can we talk respectfully when Muslims disagree about a religious practice?
