Small acts of service build community
“Everyone can dedicate an hour a month to serve someone else.”
Following the Prophet means actively rebuilding a culture of care by checking on others, speaking well, and serving people because human flourishing is shared.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Uses the Prophet’s comfort for a grieving parent to frame care as hope and support.
- Calls listeners to stop speaking ill of others and instead speak well or remain silent.
- Encourages small, regular acts of service for vulnerable people.
- Urges listeners who cannot help directly to connect people with someone who can.
- Expands responsibility to family, neighbors, Muslims, non-Muslims, and the oppressed.
- Closes with practical reminders to check on others, speak well, serve, and pray for a caring community.
In the khateeb's words
“So if you have something to say about someone. Speak well. Or stay silent. Very simple rule. But a rule that we can all apply in our lives. To rebuild the culture of the ummah.”
“But everyone can dedicate an hour a month. To serve someone else. Whether in the masjid. Or outside of the masjid. To care for someone else.”
“Because the mentality of the believer is. When humans are prospering. Everybody wins. But when humans are struggling. And suffering. Even if they have no direct relation with me. That will sooner or later. Come to me. And take away from my quality of living.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that following the Prophet includes checking on people, speaking kindly about them, and serving them. Our words should help protect our hearts from ill feelings toward others. Even a small act of service can help, and when we cannot solve someone's problem, we can connect them with someone who can. Caring for others includes our families, neighbors, and people beyond our own community, whether Muslim or non-Muslim. Helping others is part of our own growth and well-being, and a simple call or message may help someone keep going through a difficult time.
- What could you say when friends start speaking badly about someone?
- What small act of kindness could our family do for someone this week?
- Who could you check on, and what would you like to say to them?
