Gratitude must shape how we live
“Show me how you're thankful and grateful to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
True gratitude to Allah is not merely a ritual phrase but a sincere lifelong practice expressed through worship, remembrance, sharing blessings, good relationships, and service.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Invites listeners to recognize and count Allah’s countless bodily, familial, and material blessings.
- Connects gratitude inseparably with worship, sincerity, and remembrance through tasbih, tahmid, and takbir.
- Explains that gratitude must arise from the heart, be spoken by the tongue, and appear in action.
- Calls for timely obligatory worship, strong relationships, and respect across ethnic and linguistic differences.
- Contrasts personal blessings with suffering in Gaza and urges deeper gratitude and compassion.
- Encourages listeners to support and actively serve their mosques, ending with prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah is greater. When we pray, wallahi, I'm afraid. You do not know the deep meaning of it.”
“Allah is giving you na'am. Share it. Allah is helping you to finish your education.”
“Put it in action in your life. Show me how you're thankful and grateful to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“Allah will help you. Allah will guide you. Allah will support you. And you will be more thankful and grateful to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Allah has given us more blessings than we can count, including our bodies, our families, and the food we enjoy. The khateeb encouraged us to try listing those gifts so we notice what we often take for granted. He explained that gratitude belongs within our worship and should involve our words, our hearts, and our actions. We can practice it by remembering Allah sincerely, keeping up our acts of worship, sharing food, and helping someone learn. He also called us to care for our relationships, remember people suffering in Gaza, and support our masjid. As a family, we can choose one blessing to share this week and ask Allah to help us become more thankful.
- What is one blessing you used today without thinking about it?
- What could you teach or share with someone this week?
- How could we help at our masjid together?
