Belief in the hidden Imam demands action

“If my belief is truly there, then my actions will back it up.”

The khateeb, at 12:31

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that belief in the 12th Imam's prolonged life and occultation rests on trust in God's power and Qur'anic precedent, and that believers should use their limited time for faith-backed action, afterlife-conscious enjoyment, self-discipline, and less gossip.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Revisits how believers can benefit from and maintain hope in the Imam during occultation.
  2. Explains that the Imam may be concealed without being absent, drawing on a tradition attributed to Imam Ali.
  3. Defends the Imam's extraordinary longevity through tawhid, Qur'anic examples, and prophetic precedents.
  4. Urges the community to celebrate Imam Ali's birth with children and pray for those facing hardship.
  5. Uses Nahjul Balagha, Letter 31, to frame time as constantly diminishing and the afterlife as approaching.
  6. Applies five lessons about time: repair what matters, balance enjoyment with the afterlife, discipline desires, focus on the soul, and avoid gossip.

For the dinner table

Sheikh Jaffer reminded us that, although we cannot see the 12th Imam during his concealment, we have not been left alone: scholars offer guidance, and the Imam continues to help people. He explained the Imam’s long life through trust in Allah’s power, drawing on the stories of earlier prophets, including Nuh and Yunus. He encouraged us to let our belief show in our actions and to help improve the world around us. In the second sermon, he reminded us that time keeps moving, so we should give attention now to our prayers, character, and relationships. We can enjoy life while caring for our hereafter, letting reason guide our desires, and spending less time talking about others and more time improving ourselves.
