Contentment comes from blessing, not wealth

In one sentence

True contentment comes from barakah, Allah’s special goodness in what we already have, rather than from the amount of wealth or possessions we accumulate.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Defines barakah as special goodness Allah places in time, money, health, people, and places.
  2. Contrasts a wealthy man who cannot sleep with a low-income man who sleeps peacefully.
  3. Explains how missing barakah affects time, income, homes, and family relationships.
  4. Introduces a Prophetic supplication asking Allah for guidance, wellbeing, protection, and blessing.
  5. Concludes that blessing matters more than the quantity of what a person possesses.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah taught us about barakah, the special goodness Allah places in our time, money, health, homes, and relationships. Having more does not always mean feeling better: the khateeb contrasted a wealthy man who could not sleep with a man of modest means who slept peacefully. We should ask Allah to put blessing in what He has already given us, rather than thinking happiness comes only from getting more. We can remember the Prophetic supplication and practice gratitude for the blessings in our lives.

  1. Where have you noticed a small blessing making a big difference?
  2. How can we show gratitude for what Allah has already given us?
