Measure faith by steady steps toward Allah

“Allah only wants us to focus on being nearer from where we are here right now.”

The khateeb, at 19:02

In one sentence

After Ramadan, Muslims should measure success not by grades, status, or reaching a perfect endpoint, but by trusting Allah, renewing intentions, and taking steady daily steps closer to Him.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Uses exams and Ramadan to distinguish achievement from sincere growth and learning.
  2. Reframes mistakes and tests as part of the journey, asking Allah to accept Ramadan efforts and grant steadfastness.
  3. Explains “if Allah wills” as diligent planning combined with surrendering outcomes to Allah’s wisdom.
  4. Connects remembering Allah and hopeful self-talk with seeking guidance toward what is nearer to right guidance.
  5. Urges listeners to measure iman by personal progress rather than comparing themselves with others.
  6. Closes with practical steps: make dua, prioritize Allah for 10, 15 minutes, and pursue small acts of worship and service.
Try this week
Ask Allah to accept your Ramadan efforts and grant istiqamah.
Plan and prepare diligently, then say and genuinely live by “inshaAllah,” accepting Allah’s decree when outcomes differ.
Measure progress by one small step today, such as an ayah, extra rakahs, charity, helping someone, kindness to a neighbor, or dutifulness to parents.
Set aside 10, 15 minutes daily to prioritize your relationship with Allah.
Between now and Maghrib, choose a time to prioritize Allah and make dua.

For the dinner table

Fuad Saif reminds us that Ramadan’s value is not measured by a certificate or by feeling perfect afterward. Allah asks us to keep moving toward Him, even when we make mistakes or do not understand why a plan failed. We should make good plans, say “inshaAllah,” and trust Allah with the result while speaking hopefully to ourselves. Instead of comparing our iman with other people, we can look for one small step today, prayer, Quran, charity, kindness, or service. Before Maghrib, choose a few minutes to remember Allah and make dua, then try to make that closeness a daily habit.

  1. How can we know whether our worship is changing us, not just adding accomplishments?
  2. What does taking one step nearer to Allah look like for each of us this week?
  3. What ten or fifteen minutes could we set aside each day for Allah?
