Honor and support the sacred land
“Masjid-i Aqsa is being built according to the Hadith, the second masjid on the earth.”
The khutbah argues that Ard al-Sham, especially Masjid al-Aqsa, is a sacred land whose prophetic history creates an ongoing religious responsibility to honor, visit, and support it.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Ard al-Sham as a blessed land of prophets and an eschatological site.
- Traces Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, Yusuf, and Bani Israel between Palestine and Egypt.
- Explains Musa's mission, Bani Israel's refusal, their forty-year punishment, and later victories under Yusha, Talut, and Dawud.
- Continues through Suleiman, Bukht-e-Nasr, Daniel, Zakariya, Yahya, Isa, Roman rule, and Umar's reconquest.
- Describes Masjid al-Aqsa's compound, its five mosques, its Isra association, and current access restrictions.
- Urges listeners to visit when possible or support and illuminate the mosque when unable, promising more history next week.
In the khateeb's words
“Masjid-i Aqsa is being built according to the Hadith, the second masjid on the earth.”
“The whole compound, these all five masjid, is called Masjid al-Aqsa.”
“Umar radiya Allah wa ta'ala was so wise. He said, no, if I will make salah in the church, the Muslims after me, they will make it masjid.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah explored the importance of the blessed land around Palestine and Masjid al-Aqsa through stories of the prophets. The khateeb traced journeys, hardships, and lessons about obeying Allah across many generations. He reminded us that Allah’s favours continued even when people had made mistakes and faced consequences. He encouraged those able to visit Masjid al-Aqsa to do so, and explained supporting its lighting as another way to care for it. He also shared how Umar chose to pray outside a church because he worried that later Muslims would turn it into a masjid, giving us something to reflect on about wisdom and care for others.
- Which story about a prophet from today’s khutbah would you like to learn more about, and why?
- What could Umar’s concern for the church teach us about respecting places that matter to other people?
