The khutbah teaches that people naturally want happiness, but wealth, status, entertainment, and other worldly pleasures cannot satisfy us for long. Hardship and death can wake us up to our dependence on Allah, and the Quran reminds us that worldly life can disappear as quickly as a flourishing field. We were created for a meaningful purpose, will return to Allah, and our choices in this life are part of our answer to Him. When we are hurting, we should turn to Allah, ask for help, live honestly and kindly, and resist escapes that only numb pain. Real happiness is found in closeness to Allah and the lasting home of peace.

  1. What is one worldly thing that makes you happy briefly but cannot give lasting peace?
  2. What helps you remember Allah when life becomes difficult?
  3. What is one good choice you can make this week as part of your answer to Allah?
