Disasters are warnings to return to Allah
“Let's change ourselves; let's improve ourselves.”
The recent earthquakes, floods, heat waves, and fires are warning signs from Allah meant to wake believers from heedlessness, so we must repent, prepare for death and the Day of Judgment, and return to Allah before it is too late.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening dua for the oppressed, then framing: Allah sends signs as warnings (takhwif) before death surprises us
- Recent disasters (earthquakes, floods, deadly heat waves) as calls to self-reflection: have we taken heed or are we still heedless?
- Tafsir of 'the warner (an-nadheer)': the Prophet, gray hair, funerals, and cosmic events all remind us of the Hereafter
- The Prophet's example at the solar eclipse: rushing to prayer, dua, and istighfar rather than entertainment
- Earthquakes as a preview of Surah az-Zalzalah and the terror of the Day of Judgment, which made the sahaba weep
- Extreme heat and fires (Europe, North Africa, Canada) as reminders of the sun drawing near and people drowning in their sweat on Judgment Day
- Floods: water, the source of life, becomes a means of destruction by Allah's power, as with Fir'aun
- Death comes unannounced to young and old; a brother who prepares bodies reports most recent deaths are people in their 20s-30s; call to sincere tawba and solidarity with Palestine
In the khateeb's words
“the worldly sign that we see with our own eyes my dear brothers and sisters it is a reminder about the day of judgment”
“Let's change ourselves Let's improve ourselves Let's better ourselves Before it's too late”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that the earthquakes, floods, and heat waves we see in the news are not just random events; they are signs from Allah calling us to wake up, return to Him, and prepare for the Day of Judgment. The khateeb told us that death does not ask permission, and even young people are being taken suddenly, so we should not assume we have endless time. He encouraged us to use these reminders to soften our hearts, seek forgiveness, fix our prayers, and take care of one another as a community. The main takeaway is to turn back to Allah sincerely, improve ourselves bit by bit, and live each day as if it could be our last.
- What is one small good deed we can do as a family to get ready for meeting Allah?
- When we see something scary in the news, what should a Muslim remember and do?
- What is one habit we want to fix or start this week before it is too late?
