An ideal son serves his parents
“The greatest gift you can give to your mother and father is your time.”
An ideal son is defined not by career or independence but by lifelong respectful presence, active service, protection of parents' dignity, fairness after marriage, and supplication after their death.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Reframes family discussion around what makes an ideal son before Allah, beyond career success.
- Grounds respect for parents in Surah al-Isra and applies it to speech, disagreement, and independence.
- Calls presence and regular time, greetings, calls, visits, and meals, the greatest gift children can offer.
- Urges sons to initiate practical service, especially as parents age, treating care as an opportunity for reward.
- Teaches protecting parents' honor by concealing weaknesses, praising them, and correcting respectfully.
- Explains that marriage expands rather than cancels responsibilities, requiring justice between wife and parents.
- Extends filial duty after death through ongoing dua, especially after each obligatory prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“The ideal son in the court of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is a son who is a source of comfort to his parents. A son who is a source of honor to his family.”
“You can disagree with your father. But you can still be respectful to your father.”
“One of the greatest gifts a son can give their parents is not money. The greatest gift you can give to your mother and father is your time.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that being an ideal son is not mainly about career success or money. It means treating parents with respect, speaking gently, making time for them, and taking initiative to help, especially as they grow older. We should protect their dignity, speak well of them, and offer correction with wisdom when needed. Marriage does not erase a son's duties; he should be fair to both his wife and parents. Even after parents die, he can continue honoring them by making dua for them.
- What is one small way you could give a parent your time this week?
- How can you disagree respectfully when you think an adult is mistaken?
- What does serving someone look like when they are tired or getting older?
