Help one another do what is right
“Allah is in the aid and the help of his servant.”
Believers should support one another in righteousness and piety through practical help, discretion, moral correction, and learning Qur'an and Sunnah, rather than cooperate in sin.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Introduces the command to cooperate upon righteousness and piety, not sin and transgression.
- Explains helping those in difficulty, concealing private sins, and sharing surplus resources.
- Uses the images of one body and a solid structure to teach mutual support and intercession.
- Gives practical examples such as job referrals and speaking positively on someone's behalf.
- Corrects the misuse of 'concern yourselves with yourselves' and urges learning, obeying, and promoting Qur'an and Sunnah.
In the khateeb's words
“This means that you hide the faults and sins of your brothers and sisters in Islam.”
“The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam says. Allah is in the aid and the help of his servant. When his servant is in the aid and the help of his brother.”
“A Muslim is in need of a job. For example. If you know somebody that's hiring. You tell that Muslim. That over at such and such of a place. Perhaps he might find a job.”
“This statement concern yourselves with yourselves. This does not mean. Don't enjoy what is right. And forbid what is wrong.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that Muslims should cooperate in righteousness and piety, not in sin or transgression. We should make life easier for one another, share what we can, connect people to jobs and opportunities, and speak well of them when appropriate. We should protect a person's private faults instead of exposing them, while still stopping active harm such as theft. Caring for ourselves includes caring about the guidance and wellbeing of others by learning Qur'an and Sunnah, encouraging what is right, and discouraging what is wrong. The goal is a community whose members support one another like parts of one body.
- Who could we make life easier for this week, and what might that help look like?
- How can we protect someone's dignity without ignoring harm?
- What is one way our family can help someone through a connection or recommendation?
