Thank Allah before asking for more
“If you and I sit and count the favours of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala upon us, we will never finish.”
The khutbah calls listeners to recognize Allah’s countless blessings, replace chronic complaint with sincere gratitude, and express that gratitude through service to people in need.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Describes chronic dissatisfaction and distinguishes aspiring for more from being thankful for what Allah has already given.
- Uses Quranic promises and warnings to explain gratitude, ingratitude, and the impossibility of counting Allah’s blessings.
- Contrasts listeners’ safety, health, food, clothing, shelter, and water with the suffering of displaced and impoverished people.
- Applies the lesson to everyday complaints about cars, homes, clothing, and meals.
- Calls listeners to serve others through feeding, charity, qurbani donations, dua, and practical help.
- Closes with a Ramadan aid story, prayers for suffering Muslims, and a community event announcement.
In the khateeb's words
“before we aspire for more are we satisfied with what Allah has given us”
“If you and I sit and count the favours of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala upon us We will never finish”
“This is not a choice that a mother should ever make”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that we say Alhamdulillah in our prayers, and he asked us to mean it from our hearts. He explained that we can work toward a better life while appreciating what Allah has already given us. Health, shelter, food, clothing, and clean water are blessings we can easily overlook when we compare ourselves with others. Through stories of families facing hunger and hardship, he urged us to notice these gifts and help people who are struggling. He also told us about a woman who offered to share the food she had just received, reminding us that generosity can begin with whatever we have.
- What is one ordinary thing you used today that you want to thank Allah for?
- When someone has something you wish you had, what helps you appreciate your own blessings?
- What could our family share this week to help someone else?
