A mosque grows through lived Islam
“Our community is not just this building.”
The mosque extension is a blessing and a new beginning: the community must turn its physical growth into lived Islam through remembrance, inherited practice, service, and trust in Allah rather than worldly institutions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opening Qur'an recitation, khutbah testimony, and praise of Allah and the Prophet.
- Gives thanks for the mosque extension, its builders, leaders, and community sacrifices.
- Contrasts Islamology, talk and analysis, with authentic Islam practiced through worship, family, service, and communal life.
- Urges reliance on Allah while still planning and working amid the failure of worldly institutions.
- Frames the extension as a beginning for a remembrance-centered community modeled on Medina.
- Asks listeners to reflect during the holiday break and closes with prayers before Jumu'ah prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“Our community is not just this building. Our community is not just the old building. Our community is what lies in here. and our continual practice of this tradition.”
“that we must strive from today and every day moving forward. that this community be a true community of Islam. A community that doesn't just talk the talk. but does the act of Islam.”
“We work as hard as we can. We plan as best as we can. We execute as shrewdly as we can. But at the end of the day, only if Allah wants something will it happen.”
“A moment during this break to think about the difference between fake Islam and real Islam. Take a moment to identify for yourself where is the beauty of Islam.”
For the dinner table
Today we celebrated the opening of our mosque extension and thanked the people whose work and sacrifices made it possible. The khateeb reminded us that a mosque is more than walls: a real Muslim community remembers Allah, follows the Prophet's example, and lets that guidance shape home, work, worship, and relationships. He taught that we should work hard and plan wisely, while remembering that our ultimate trust belongs to Allah. The new space is a beginning, so we should help make it a place where families pray, learn, celebrate, comfort one another, and remember Allah together. During the holiday break, we can ask what the beauty of Islam looks like in our own behavior and how we can live it more fully.
- How can our family make our home a place of remembrance this week?
- What is one way we can show the beauty of Islam in how we treat someone else?
- When have you kept trying even though the result was uncertain?
