Keep Palestine alive in Muslim memory
“Jews, Christians used to live beside the Muslims in Palestine, in Jerusalem, in a peaceful way for centuries.”
The khutbah urges Muslims to keep Palestine and al-Aqsa alive in religious memory, teach their significance to youth, and stand for Palestinian dignity and rights through peace and justice.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Connects current al-Aqsa tensions and Palestinian displacement to Quranic recognition of Jerusalem.
- Affirms peace, justice, equality, and coexistence among Muslims, Christians, and Jews.
- Uses Umar’s Jerusalem covenant as an example of protecting non-Muslim religious communities.
- Describes the division of the Ibrahimi Mosque and urges parents to educate young people.
- Explains al-Aqsa’s religious privileges, calls for dignity and rights, and closes with supplication and prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“Jews, Christians used to live beside the Muslims in Palestine, in Jerusalem, in a peaceful way for centuries.”
“Nobody has the right to demolish their churches or temple, or even to break their cross.”
“Finally, I'm urging you, fathers, mothers, to teach this task to our youth. If they don't learn about it from you, they will be ignorant till the rest of their lives.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah focused on Palestine and why Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa matters to Muslims. The khateeb reminded us that families want peace, safety, and freedom, and he asked us to consider the pain of losing a home. He spoke about justice and respect for other faiths, describing protection for their places of worship. He also reminded parents to teach children about Al-Aqsa’s religious significance, including its place as the first qibla. His message called us to remember Palestinian dignity, stand up for rights, and pray for protection for Palestinians.
- What makes a home feel safe, and how might someone feel if they had to leave theirs?
- How can we show respect for neighbors whose religion is different from ours?
- What would you like to learn together about Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa?
