Seek firmness before you feel ready

“It's not a sign of your failure.”

The khateeb, at 25:23

In one sentence

Because the human heart is naturally unstable, believers should repeatedly ask Allah for firmness, guard what they consume, anchor mornings and evenings in dhikr, and act in worship even before they feel spiritually ready.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Introduces the prophetic image of the heart as a feather moved by wind and explains its natural instability.
  2. Shows how daily distractions, life changes, and ordinary responsibilities can weaken spiritual focus, including Hanzala’s report.
  3. Explains that firmness is not achieved once but must continually be sought from Allah.
  4. Recommends repeating the prophetic dua, guarding what enters the heart, and practicing morning and evening adhkar.
  5. Urges listeners to act before feeling motivated, then closes with prayers for deceased and ill community members.

For the dinner table

The sermon taught that the heart can change quickly, like a feather moved by the wind, and that this happens even to sincere believers. We can ask Allah to keep our hearts firm, be careful about what we watch and consume, and protect ten minutes of remembrance in the morning and evening. We should not wait until we feel inspired: praying on time, reading Quran, giving, and other good deeds can help bring the right feelings. The khutbah closed by reminding us to pray for deceased loved ones and for people who are ill.

  2. What helps you remember Allah in the morning or at night?
  3. What good action can you do even when you do not feel like it?
