Worldly blessings can become delayed punishment

“The only next certain event in this dunya is meeting with your Lord Allah.”

The khateeb, at 72:55

In one sentence

The khutbah warns that worldly prosperity can be istidraj, a delayed punishment, unless people use Allah’s blessings with gratitude, worship, and wholehearted submission.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Explains that humans and jinn were created to worship Allah, while worldly blessings are entrusted for testing.
  2. Introduces istidraj: people may receive expanding wealth, health, and comfort after forgetting divine reminders.
  3. Uses wildfires, luxury, Qarun, and the grave to show that possessions cannot secure or accompany a person.
  4. Clarifies that lawful prosperity is not itself impiety, but it must not displace gratitude and worship.
  5. Reminds listeners that worldly life is temporary, faith can become difficult to hold, and Satan beautifies wrongdoing.
  6. Closes by urging wholehearted submission, remembrance, repentance, and preparation to meet Allah.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah was about a verse in Surah al-An'am. When people forget Allah's reminders, sometimes Allah gives them even more money, health and comfort, and then their test comes suddenly. This is called istidraj, the delayed punishment. The khateeb reminded us that we were created to worship Allah, and that nothing in this world is certain except meeting Him one day. He talked about the mansions lost in the California wildfires, which even insurance couldn't save, and reminded us that when we die we wear a simple white cloth with no pockets. Having nice things is okay, and many of the Prophet's companions were wealthy. What matters is that we stay thankful, never become arrogant, and never forget Allah.

  1. If you could only take one thing with you to meet Allah, what would you want it to be, and why?
  2. Can you think of a blessing Allah gave you this week that you forgot to thank Him for?
  3. Why do you think Shaitan tries to make bad things look fun or good?
