Keep asking Allah without losing hope
The goal of Ramadan is to cultivate a constant, hopeful relationship with Allah through dhikr, persistent dua, and trust in His power, following Zakariya's example.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Ramadan's completion should lead to gratitude, glorification of Allah, and awareness of His nearness.
- Dhikr is defined as continual heart-awareness that guides obedience and avoidance of wrongdoing.
- The congregation is encouraged to recite Surah al-Kahf on Friday and send abundant blessings upon the Prophet.
- The story of Zakariya shows humble, persistent supplication despite old age and biological impossibility.
- Allah's response with Yahya demonstrates divine power and the qualities of piety, compassion, and respect.
- The khutbah closes by urging listeners to ask Allah alone, remember Him in prosperity, and maintain hope while praying for the oppressed.
In the khateeb's words
“Dhikr is not just what we do with our tongues Dhikr is a state of your heart Where you live your life, where we live our lives perpetually aware of Allah”
“Your dua is an arrow you shoot by night that never ever ever misses its target.”
“Never ever ever become despondent in the mercy of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“Any one of us, any one of us, and every one of us can knock on that door directly, the door of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb says Ramadan's deepest goal is to build a close bond with Allah that continues after the month ends. He explains that dhikr is not only words on the tongue but living with awareness of Allah and choosing what pleases Him. Through Zakariya's dua for Yahya, he teaches us to be humble about our weakness while never losing hope in Allah's power. He encourages Friday recitation of Surah al-Kahf, sending salawat upon the Prophet, asking Allah directly, and remembering Him in times of ease. He also prays for people suffering oppression and asks the community to keep turning to Allah with hope.
- What would remembering Allah throughout an ordinary day look like for you?
- When have you stayed hopeful during a difficult situation?
- How could we make one Friday practice, such as Surah Al-Kahf, part of our family routine?
