Prosperity can test your faith
“You're good only when you feel that you are heading in the right direction with Allah.”
Material prosperity amid disobedience may be istidraj, so believers must respond to blessings with gratitude, humility, continued worship, and self-accountability.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Defines istidraj as apparent worldly prosperity amid persistent disobedience and gradual movement toward punishment.
- Uses a hadith and Quranic examples to show that wealth, strength, and enjoyment can end in sudden destruction.
- Clarifies that Islam does not reject wealth or power; the real test is how blessings are used.
- Urges listeners to compare their current masjid attendance, community ties, Quran reading, and dua with earlier devotion.
- Closes with reminders about distinguishing needs from wants, remembering suffering communities, and maintaining gratitude.
In the khateeb's words
“What the Quran is teaching us is the following. Stay good with Allah. And when you get the ni'm and the khayr and the blessings that you want or the rizq, every time you get that, stay careful.”
“No, you're not good. You're good only when you feel that you are heading in the right direction with Allah.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that having more money, comfort, or power does not automatically mean Allah is pleased with us. Sometimes continued blessings while someone remains disobedient can be istidraj, a gradual enticement toward punishment. We should respond to blessings by saying Alhamdulillah, staying humble, and continuing our worship and good deeds. A good self-check is whether we still attend the masjid, stay connected to the community, read Quran, and make dua. We should also distinguish our needs from our wants and remember people who lack basic necessities.
- What blessing are you grateful for, and how can you use it well?
- What worship habit should we protect when life becomes easier?
- How can our family tell the difference between a need and a want?
