Draw closer to Allah every day

ICFV · Naser Tekish

“Our goal in this life is to please Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”

The khateeb, at 5:33

In one sentence

The true goal of life is Allah’s pleasure, and closeness to Him is developed by turning to Him emotionally in every circumstance, obeying Him, and practicing daily remembrance.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Reframes life’s goal as pleasing Allah rather than pursuing Jannah directly.
  2. Invites listeners to honestly assess the depth of their relationship with Allah.
  3. Uses prophetic examples to show how believers bring every emotion and hardship to Allah.
  4. Contrasts lasting devotion with a merely transactional relationship, including examples from Gaza.
  5. Offers daily practices for strengthening connection with Allah and concludes with prayer.
Try this week
Make a sincere intention to get closer to Allah.
Spend three private minutes with Allah each day, sharing your feelings and experiences.
Practice morning and evening adhkar daily.
Read or listen to the Quran every day, even if it is only one ayah or one word.
Do small good deeds, such as charity, kind words, or smiling, with the intention of pleasing Allah.
Sources the khateeb cited

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

The khutbah taught that our deepest goal is to please Allah, with Jannah as a byproduct. A close relationship with Allah means bringing every emotion and hardship to Him, as the prophets did, instead of turning to Him only when we need something. Sincere faith does not erase sadness or fear; it gives us somewhere to take them. This week, we can set aside three private minutes each day, keep morning and evening adhkar, and read or listen to at least one ayah. We can also grow closer through small good deeds done to please Allah.

  1. What feeling would you most want to share with Allah during three quiet minutes?
  2. Which small good deed could our family practice this week just to please Allah?
  3. How can reading even one ayah each day affect our relationship with Allah?
