Build community through shared responsibility
“The Jummah is just an example, or what we call a prototype, of what the community life should be.”
Allah renews human beings and communities through guidance, and Muslims must cultivate their souls, share their gifts, and build society collectively through Qur'an-guided consultation.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- The speaker begins with God's oneness and faith as a source of human excellence.
- He frames spiritual decline as oppressing the soul and losing one's best orientation.
- Using seeds, plants, life, death, and resurrection, he presents growth as gradual cultivation under Allah's trust.
- He connects personal growth to the community's history, renewed identity, dignity, and responsibility to address social harm.
- He calls for Qur'an-guided thinking in economics, culture, governance, and communication.
- He develops shura as shared responsibility, requiring leaders and community members to contribute their expertise.
- He closes by presenting Jumu'ah as a prototype for community life and urging practical service and reconnection.
In the khateeb's words
“Death is a part of the life, but that's not our life. Our life is to be alive.”
“whatever we do, we have to put our filter through the Quran.”
“The Jummah is just an example, or what we call a prototype, of what the community life should be.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allah created us with an excellent human nature and gives us guidance to keep growing. Like a seed becoming a plant, our souls, families, and community develop in stages. We should use the Quran to filter our thinking, share our skills through mutual consultation, and help build institutions that benefit people. The sermon connected our community's history and legacy with a responsibility to restore dignity and care for those harmed by drugs, violence, or oppression. This week, we can reconnect with one another, serve practically, and help our community produce good fruit.
- What is one way our family can help our community grow this week?
- What gift, skill, or lesson could you share with someone else?
- How can we use the Quran to guide one decision this week?
