Death & the hereafterFrom the masjid's own video, Jun 6, 2026.

Use your time to prepare for Jannah

“Time is the only thing stopping you from death.”

The khateeb, at 5:41

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Opening recitation and hadith: near the Final Hour, time will feel compressed, a year like a month, a day like an hour
  2. Life-expectancy math: of ~60 years, only a handful remain for the akhira after sleep, education, work, and entertainment
  3. News of death tolls (Palestine, Lebanon, Iran) has desensitized us, though death should be our top wake-up call
  4. The test of an akhira-oriented mindset: examine your goals and priorities and revise them as the new Islamic year (Muharram) begins
  5. Three excuses of the people of Jahannam: mocking/belittling the deen (e.g., excusing interest), deflecting blame onto Allah and leaders, and begging for 'one more chance' despite countless daily chances
  6. Surah Yunus qualities of the people of Hellfire: not yearning to meet Allah, being content with the dunya, and heedlessness of His signs, contrasted with Abu Bakr weeping in salah imagining Jahannam
  7. Second khutbah: make Jannah a reality in your mind, teach children to visualize it, the Sahaba's yearning for martyrdom at Mu'tah, Ibn Al-Qayyim on wasting time being worse than death, and a closing call to make a life plan anchored in Jannah

Go home and ask your child what they want in Jannah; have them visualize and list it
Serve the community and donate to the masjid when asked
Make concrete goals and a plan for your life anchored in Jannah and the love of Allah

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that our time on earth is much shorter than we think, after sleep, school, and work, only a few years of a lifetime are truly ours to offer to Allah. He warned that the people of Hellfire will make excuses: belittling Allah's rules, blaming others, and begging for one more chance, even though every new day is already a chance from Allah. He taught us from Surah Yunus that the people of Jannah are the opposite, they long to meet Allah, don't settle for just this world, and stay awake to His guidance. The Sahaba loved Allah so much that even death felt like a doorway to Him. As a new Islamic year begins, we were asked to check our goals, picture Jannah like it's real, and make a plan for our lives built on the love of Allah.

  1. If you could ask for anything in Jannah, what would be the first three things on your list?
  2. What is one thing you do every day that you could do 'for Allah' instead?
  3. What goal would you set for yourself this new Islamic year?
