Allah gives ease alongside every hardship
“You and I need to find that ease.”
When hardship and discouraging news make believers feel abandoned, Surah al-Sharh teaches them to recognize Allah’s blessings, seek ease through faith and dua, and keep Allah at the center through prayer and purposeful effort.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khateeb asks listeners to put away devices and frames Surah al-Sharh as Allah’s consolation to the Prophet during persecution.
- He explains expanded hearts as comfort through Islam, guidance, solitude, and connection with Allah.
- He interprets lifted burdens and raised reputation as reasons to notice blessings rather than magnify difficulties.
- He explains that hardship is accompanied by multiple avenues of ease and rejects despair.
- He applies the command to strive after responsibilities to dua, tahajjud, and the five daily prayers.
- He closes by directing longing toward Allah, trusting divine timing, and praying for oppressed and suffering communities.
In the khateeb's words
“then we have to invest not in real estate not in crypto in bitcoin and ethereum not in uh swelling up our investment portfolios we need to invest in our relationship with Allah”
“You and I need to find that ease. You and I need to put in the effort and strive to look for that ease.”
“when Allah becomes the center of everything in your life and mine, then it doesn't matter what the haters have to say.”
For the dinner table
This khutbah reminded us that hardship does not mean Allah has abandoned us. Allah acknowledges our pain while teaching us to notice His blessings and seek the ease that accompanies every difficulty. When we have finished our responsibilities, we should turn to dua, prayer, and remembrance instead of letting our free time disappear into distractions. We should keep Allah at the center of our lives while doing our part and trusting His timing. The khutbah also encouraged us to pray for people suffering from oppression, illness, poverty, and disaster around the world.
- What is one blessing or source of ease you can notice during a difficult week?
- What could you do with ten quiet minutes to make dua or remember Allah?
- How can we do our part while remaining patient with Allah’s timing?
