Seek reconciliation and trust Allah's timing
“If a person wants Islah, Allah will give Islah as long as a person doesn't make excuses.”
Every problem can move toward resolution when people sincerely seek reconciliation, follow Allah’s guidance, trust His timing, seek wisdom, and reject excuses in favor of truth.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Frames global, communal, family, and personal problems as requiring a sincere desire for resolution.
- Uses the Prophet’s prayer for Umar and the Makkah boycott to illustrate hope, dua, and unexpected divine openings.
- Presents four principles: sincerely wanting a solution, following Allah’s methodology, trusting Allah’s timing, and seeking wisdom.
- Explains that dua may be answered through direct fulfillment, protection from harm, something better, or reward in the Hereafter.
- Uses Hudaybiyyah and Umm Salma’s advice to show how wise action can create unity.
- Uses Ka'b ibn Malik’s experience at Tabuk to emphasize truthfulness, patience, and avoiding excuses.
- Closes by urging listeners to turn to Allah and believe that every problem has a solution.
In the khateeb's words
“A person has to trust that my effort is not what will bring the solution, but Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will bring the solution when Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala deems it right.”
“If a person wants Islah, Allah will give Islah as long as a person doesn't make excuses.”
“Our determination in front of Allah will judge how Allah deals with us.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that problems in the world, our families, and our own lives should not be treated as hopeless. Real change begins when we sincerely want islah, follow Allah’s way, and trust His timing. We should ask Allah for wisdom because the right response is not always obvious, and help may come through an unexpected person or action. The stories of Umar, Hudaybiyyah, and Ka'b ibn Malik showed the value of hope, wise action, and truthful repentance. When difficulties come, we can turn to Allah, avoid excuses, speak truthfully, and keep looking for a faithful path toward repair.
- When have you kept trying after a problem felt stuck?
- What could asking Allah for wisdom look like this week?
- Why can telling the truth be brave even when it makes things harder at first?
