Justice requires repairing the harm we cause
“It is to establish justice that Allah sent the prophets and Allah revealed the books.”
Justice is foundational to creation and revelation, while oppression is a grave wrong that will be judged, so Muslims must repair personal harms and stand with the oppressed.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Allah created the cosmos with truth and justice, and sent prophets and revelations to establish justice.
- Dhulm, or oppression, is presented as the greatest evil, including violating Allah’s rights and people’s rights.
- Wronging others brings consequences in this life and the Hereafter, where good deeds may be transferred to victims.
- Listeners are urged to examine their dealings, apologize, repay, and repair harm before Judgment Day.
- The sermon applies this duty collectively to Palestine, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, and other oppressed people.
- The congregation is urged to respond through prayer, awareness, petitions, fundraising, public action, and support for justice.
In the khateeb's words
“It is to establish justice that Allah sent the prophets and Allah revealed the books.”
“O Muslim, do not be like the bankrupt person. O Muslim, you will not get away with dhulm.”
“How can Allah bless a nation where the weak are allowed to be persecuted and the strong allow that to happen?”
“We have to have an excuse on the Day of Judgment that we have tried to do whatever we can.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught that justice is part of the order Allah placed in creation and one reason He sent prophets and revealed books. Oppression, or dhulm, includes violating people’s lives, property, honor, and rights, and it is not forgotten on the Day of Judgment. We should examine our dealings, apologize, repay, and repair harm when we have wronged someone. We should also care about oppressed people beyond our immediate circle and respond through prayer, awareness, petitions, public action, and practical support. The message was to keep a clear conscience by doing what we can for truth and justice.
- Where might someone’s rights be overlooked in ordinary family or school life?
- What does a real apology look like when we have hurt someone?
- How can we stand with someone who is being treated unfairly?
