Prepare for the Hereafter through daily worship
“No deed is a small deed.”
Because death can come at any time, believers should prepare for the Hereafter through obligatory worship, sincere small deeds, and service to Allah’s creation.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reflecting on Quranic and created signs with the heart, not merely the eyes.
- Using the recent death of a 17-year-old community member to confront life’s certainty and brevity.
- Learning from the Harun al-Rashid and Bahlool story that worldly preparation is insufficient without preparation for the Hereafter.
- Recognizing that small, sincere deeds, parental service, and compassion may carry great weight with Allah.
- Beginning with the obligatory acts, especially prayer, while honoring neighbors and avoiding harm that can consume one’s good deeds.
- Concluding with supplications, Quranic reminders, and congregational prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“but all of us we have terminal illnesses what's a terminal illness it is a physical situation that guarantees death will occur”
“where it's not dollars and cents it's not pounds it's not yen it's good deeds and those deeds and the divine market of Allah they are multiplied”
“no deed is a small deed we prepare for death not by measuring deeds but by taking advantage of every deed”
“if i'm leaving my home and i actually think i'm going to die i won't just wave to my wife and kids and leave i might give them a hug i might kiss their forehead i might tell them i love them and leave”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that death is certain and can arrive at any age, so the recent loss in the community should awaken us rather than make us despair. Everyday creation, like the seasons and the sun, can remind us that life moves toward its end and return to Allah. Preparing for the Hereafter starts with the obligatory acts, especially prayer, and grows through sincere small deeds. We also prepare by honoring parents, helping at home, serving neighbors, and avoiding harm, because worship does not excuse hurting people. We may grieve those who die while hoping to meet them in Paradise, and we should use that hope to live with love and purpose.
- What is one small good deed you could do today that people might not notice?
- How can we show someone at home that we love and appreciate them?
- What does it mean to prepare for the Hereafter this week?
