A community must be ready for guidance
The 11th Imam concealed the 12th Imam because the community was unready to follow a unifying guide and hostile authorities threatened his life, while believers today must pursue moral responsibility, reconciliation, and service to the oppressed.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Raises why the 11th Imam did not publicly announce the 12th Imam.
- Explains that the community had repeatedly rejected or killed earlier unifying Imams.
- Uses the image of repeatedly destroyed neighborhood lights to illustrate communal unreadiness.
- Explains the political surveillance and threats that required concealing the Mahdi and his mother’s identity.
- Discusses the multiple traditional names attributed to the 12th Imam’s mother.
- Prays for oppressed people and discusses international recognition of Palestine.
- Connects Palestine to Canada’s residential-school history and Truth and Reconciliation.
- Closes by urging personal reflection, reconciliation with Allah, and service to others.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah gave us 11 lights and the people killed and murdered these 11 lights and therefore the people were not ready for the 12th Imam”
“The reason for the delay of the coming of the Imam is divine wisdom, of course. But part of the problem is that we are yet not ready for the arrival of our Imam.”
“And that's why it's more than just recognition that is required, it's effort.”
“Otherwise, if we just think that we don't have a responsibility for others, that means honestly, nothing about Imam Hussain's message has even come close to our hearts.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah explains that the 12th Imam was concealed because people had repeatedly rejected earlier divinely guided leaders, and powerful rulers threatened his life. The speaker says that being ready for guidance requires more than simply waiting; it requires moral growth and responsibility. He connects this lesson to Palestine and to the suffering of Indigenous children and families through Canada’s residential-school system. Remembering injustice should lead to real effort, service, and care for others. We are also encouraged to examine our own lives and repair what needs reconciliation with Allah.
- What does it mean for a community to be ready for good leadership?
- How can remembering painful history lead to helpful action?
- What is one thing in your life that might need reconciliation?
