Remember death and rush to do good
“Treat every day as an opportunity to gain the pleasure of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.”
Because every believer will die and meet Allah, Muslims must reject spiritual dormancy and actively do good, beginning in worship and family life and extending into local civic responsibility.
The khutbah in 9 steps
- The imam's weekly duty is to remind the congregation of death and the coming meeting with Allah.
- Umar ibn al-Khattab's reflection on how casually people treat news of death.
- The benefit of healthy death-awareness for character, family relationships, and daily ambition.
- The prophetic warning to rush good deeds before fitan fall like waves of darkness.
- Criticism of dormancy through Imam al-Shafi'i's poem: still water corrupts, while moving water stays pure.
- The fallacy of caring only about overseas causes while neglecting local responsibility.
- Surah al-Hajj: prayer, worship, doing good, and struggling in Allah's path form the believer's active identity.
- Rejecting conspiracy-driven helplessness and embracing American civic duty, including voting.
- Closing supplication for the oppressed in Sudan, Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, and Gaza.
In the khateeb's words
“It is your responsibility to make sure that you treat every day as an opportunity to gain the pleasure of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala”
“Stop listening to podcasts For hours on end That only convince you with one thing That the world is evil And the people in power are too evil And they have too much power For you to change the world”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that life is short and that none of us can guarantee even one more day. Remembering death should not make us hopeless; it should help us become more grateful, responsible, and eager to repair relationships and serve others. Prayer, worship, and good deeds are meant to shape people who bring goodness to the world. We were encouraged not to become passive or helpless, but to help our families, local communities, and wider society. As Muslims, our identity is connected to goodness, justice, and using the voices and opportunities Allah has given us.
- What is one helpful thing you can do for someone in our family this week?
- How can remembering that life is short change the way you treat people?
- Where could you use your voice to make something better?
