Muslims must face oppression with courage
“Not every Muslim is a Mu'min.”
Muslims should follow Prophet Muhammad’s example by holding to the Qur’an and Sunnah, practicing justice and mercy, and applying those principles courageously to present-day oppression and conflict.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Recounts the companions’ panic at the Battle of Hunayn and Ibn Abbas’s reminder of their pledge.
- Shows the Prophet listening to advice from the newly converted Abu Safiyyad and making du'a while throwing stones.
- Argues that khutbahs should address current events, criticizing attacks on Muslim-majority countries during Ramadan and Eid.
- Emphasizes worship, caring for the poor, fasting, hajj, good behavior, and justice.
- Concludes by urging Muslims to hold to Allah, the Qur’an, and Sunnah, distinguishing true believers by their striving.
In the khateeb's words
“But no, Prophet Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam, he listened to Abu Safiyyad.”
“We have to bring the kutbah home. Meaning, we have to address current events. And we shouldn't be afraid.”
“Every Mu'min is a Muslim. Not every Muslim is a Mu'min.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb described the Prophet Muhammad listening to advice from someone who had only recently accepted Islam, offering a lesson in humility. He reminded us that faith includes worshipping Allah, caring for people in need, and behaving well. He also urged the congregation to connect the khutbah with current events and spoke with concern about violence against Muslims. In his account of the battle, he highlighted the Prophet allowing families to be reunited. He closed by encouraging us to hold firmly to Allah, the Quran, and the Sunnah, and to work each day to please Allah through our actions and what we give.
- What helps you listen when someone unexpected gives you good advice?
- Who could we help this week, and what could we do together?
- What is one everyday action you could do with the intention of pleasing Allah?
