Worship Allah through every part of life
“I have to fulfill the purpose of my life.”
Our purpose is to worship and obey Allah by bringing faith into every area of life, serving creation, standing for justice, and preparing to answer for our responsibilities.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Defines life's purpose through Qur'an 51:56 as worship and obedience to Allah.
- Asks Muslims to assess themselves across three levels of commitment.
- Uses Gaza paramedic Rifat Radwan and journalist Fatima Hasuna as examples of purposeful sacrifice.
- Contrasts purposeful living with wealth, pleasure, and desire-driven choices.
- Expands religious responsibility into personal, family, work, leisure, and community life.
In the khateeb's words
“I have to serve the deen of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. I have to fulfill the purpose of my life.”
“Let's make us a little uncomfortable asking ourselves that when Hasuna and Rifat will be with us on the day of judgment, how will we answer Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala?”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah was about why Allah created us. He tells us in the Qur'an that we were made to worship and obey Him, and the khateeb reminded us to check honestly, on a regular basis, whether we are really living that way. He told us about two young people from Gaza: Rifat Radwan, a 23-year-old paramedic who knew he was serving Allah even as he went to help others on the day he was killed, and Fatima Hasuna, a journalist who asked that her death not be treated as just a number. He reminded us that life isn't only about money, careers and fun, and that one day Allah will ask each of us how we used our lives. He encouraged us to do something real, like serving food to people in need, supporting relief work and standing up for what is right, and to stay calm and wise instead of getting angry on social media. Tonight before bed, he asked each of us to think about how we would answer Allah.
- If someone asked you what your life is for, what would you say?
- What is one thing you could do this week to help someone who needs it?
- Why do you think Fatima Hasuna didn't want people to think of her as just a number?
