Use Rajab to renew worship
“The community of Muhammad is an engaged community that's not selfish but that cares about his neighbors.”
The khutbah urges believers to use Rajab and the new year to renew sincere worship, turn intention into action, serve their communities, and raise a merciful next generation.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Calls believers to use Rajab and the approaching Ramadan season for repentance, Qur'an reading, prayer, dhikr, and making up missed fasts.
- Urges sincere intention and action, with stronger local and international community engagement.
- Reviews the masjid's accomplishments in food distribution, humanitarian outreach, Umrah sponsorship, youth programs, education, and interfaith work.
- Charges the next generation to lead with mercy, character, courage, and service over the next fifty years.
- Shares a baby's recovery after sustained communal prayer and asks continued dua for people facing illness and hardship.
- Closes by teaching contentment with Allah's decree, remembering the oppressed, and inviting others through compassionate character.
In the khateeb's words
“Rajab therefore is our time to begin the spiritual cultivation by increasing dhikr seeking forgiveness istighfar”
“everybody has a role to play don't minimize your role take it inshallah for the gift that it is”
“the community of Muhammad is an engaged community that's not selfish but that cares about his neighbors cares about even his enemies”
“invite everybody in and we invite them by our character we invite them with our smile we invite them with our open hearts and our compassion for life”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Rajab is a sacred month and a chance to prepare our hearts for Ramadan. We can begin by reading more Qur'an, praying, remembering Allah, seeking forgiveness, and making up missed fasts. He also celebrated the community's service to families, children, people experiencing homelessness, and Muslims around the world. Young people should learn from their elders and grow into leaders known for mercy, character, and service. Finally, we were encouraged to keep praying for people in hardship, trust Allah through life's difficulties, and welcome others through kindness and compassion.
- What is one good habit you can start before Ramadan?
- How can our family serve someone who is lonely, unhoused, sick, or in prison?
- What does welcoming someone through a smile or kind action look like at school or home?
