Four prophetic actions that lead to Jannah
“We can't just say we believe without any action.”
Consistently practicing four prophetic actions, spreading salam, feeding others, maintaining broken family ties, and praying at night, strengthens faith and community and leads toward Jannah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces the Prophet’s four instructions to the people of Medina as actions leading to Jannah.
- Explains how spreading salam builds peace, love, brotherhood, and mutual respect.
- Encourages feeding neighbors and people in need sincerely for Allah’s sake.
- Defines true kinship as reconnecting with relatives after relationships have been severed.
- Urges night prayer, beginning with small consistent efforts and using the night for supplication.
- Concludes that consistent righteous action and mutual encouragement lead to Paradise.
In the khateeb's words
“The Muslim protects the other Muslim. We are brothers to one another. We do not backbite one another. We do not make fun of one another.”
“Giving food is from faith. It shows our iman. We have to prove our iman. We can't just say we believe without any action.”
“Our hearts begin to love it. And that's how our pious predecessors were. They love worship. That was the best. And the most best thing towards them was worship of Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us of four actions the Prophet encouraged: spreading salam, feeding others, keeping family ties, and praying at night. Giving and returning salam helps grow love and peace, including with people we do not yet know. Sharing food with people in need and with our neighbors puts faith into action, and we should do it for Allah without expecting thanks. Keeping family ties includes making an effort to reconnect when relationships have become distant or strained. The khateeb also encouraged starting night prayer with even two rakahs, using that quiet time to ask Allah for forgiveness and help, and supporting one another in doing good consistently.
- Who could you help feel welcome by greeting them with salam this week?
- What food would you enjoy helping prepare to share with a neighbor?
- What would you like to ask Allah for during a quiet moment of prayer?
